Use the calculator below to estimate how much soil you will need for your project. Here are a few rules to follow when determining the depth of mulch:

  • Applying mulch annually: usually a thickness of 1-2 inches should do the job if you’re mulching on a regular basis.
  • For flower beds or if you haven’t mulched in a while, aim for a depth of 4-6 inches.
  • If you’re dealing with a lot of weeds in your yard or garden area and need to get rid of them without using chemicals that can harm the environment or your health, then it’s best to limit the height of the weeds to around 6 inches at most to avoid potential problems, like decay or fire risks.
  • Make sure not to heap mulch up against the stems of plants to avoid any potential issues.
